Help to Rural Schools Project

Our help to rural schools project is a joint effort by the foundation and EQUITY AMERICAN SCHOOL. The foundation contributes between 10% and 20% of the cost of purchasing the materials, the secondary students and teachers raise the balance of the funds through various projects and build the furniture and make the didactic posters.

Each year the EAS secondary students, led by their student government, spend the school year raising money to buy materials for school furniture and didactic materials for underfunded public schools in the interior of Guatemala. In the past, they have built furniture and made didactic material for rural schools in San Raymundo Sacatepequez, Solola, Santa Lucía Utatlán, and Zacapa.

Building School Furniture:

During the last week of school, students are organized into groups and taught the carpentry and/or design skills necessary to build desks, chairs, bookshelves and whiteboards. On average, the students and staff are able to construct and donate 100 desks and 100 chairs per year, plus some bookshelves and whiteboards.

Making Didactic Material:

Educational posters based on competencies listed in the Guatemalan Curriculo Nacional Base (CNB) are also made and laminated by the students and staff.
